Social media giant Facebook has agreed a deal with the MLB to stream 25 weekly games. Having previously unveiled Facebook Sports Stadium, this move builds on original ideas to add video content and create an entirely new user experience.
The MLB’s first digital-only distribution, this will see the games shared via Facebook Watch as part of the MLB Live Show page, having been approved unanimously by 30 Major League clubs.
Speaking of the advancement which is sure to increase fan engagement, MLB’s Tony Petitti said: “It is a major creative step forward in serving with our diverse, passionate community of fans, who will enjoy a uniquely interactive experience watching our games on Facebook every week.”
Available across multiple platforms, fans can watch on desktop and smartphone as well as desktop and television, encouraging users to make the most of commenting and interaction features on the social media platform.
Facebook’s Dan Reed spoke of the opportunities this will bring. He said: “We’re excited to make Facebook Watch a home for exclusive, live games every week this season. Community and conversation are central to both baseball and Facebook, and MLS Network’s innovative broadcasts will bring these interactive and social elements of the game to life to fans around the world in new ways on our platforms.”
